Founded in 1873,[2] when Lorenzo Benetti (1844–1914), bought the Darsena Luca shipyard to found the Benetti shipyard.[1] The yard built commercial vessels,[3] including fishing boats and Mediterranean trading ships. On his death in 1914, his sons Gino and Emilio took over, and renamed the yard Fratelli Benetti. They continued using wooden construction, but now built ocean-going ships, and some private yachts. After the death of Gino in 1927, his sons Giuseppe and Virgilio took over his share, while Maurizio and Bertani assisted their father Emilio.[citation needed]

What is the history of the Benetti shipyard?
Benetti was founded in 1873, initially building wooden sailing ships. Over the course of the next 30 years, Benetti launched more than 30 sailing vessels, including schooners, tartanes, and cutters. In 1921, the shipyard launched the largest sailing ship in the world, the 51m ST GEORGE, which is now on display at the Museum of Science and Technology in Milan. In 1962 the Benetti shipyard heralded a new era with the launch of DELFINO, an 18m motor yacht, which represented a new boating genre. In 1966, the luxury boat builder launched the acclaimed 22m GABBIANO, its first luxury motor yacht. Larger yachts quickly followed, including the 33m MEDITERRANEO, the 39m EL CARAN (formerly DENEB STAR), owned by rockstar David Bowie, and the 86m NABIA – the largest yacht of its time. In 1985, Benetti was acquired by the founder of Azimut Yachts, marking the beginning of a new era for the luxury Italian shipyard. Today, the Azimut Benetti Group is one of the world’s largest shipyards, with a reputation for excellence.
