History of Sunseeker Yachts
Throughout the 1960’s, Robert Braithwaite worked at a Marina called Friar’s Cliff Marine, it was a company that sold various brands of vessels including small boats created by American boat builder, Owens Cruisers Inc. In 1969, Friar’s Cliff Marine became Poole Powerboats when it moved to the town of Poole. Robert saw a grand opportunity when Owens Cruisers decided they would no longer distribute their crafts to Europe, closing the UK operation. At this point, Robert went to Owens offices in Arundel to negotiate a deal to acquire their boat molds. Robert Braithwaite dreamt of constructing a new kind of boat that has not been made before. With using revolutionary materials and technology, the early designs he built were tailored to a specific, handful of customers.

MORE ABOUT SUNSEEKER YACHTS
Move forward to the early seventies where there were no builders of boats for sport or leisure in the UK. The first vessel to launch was the Sovereign 17 in 1971. Then in 1972, the Sovereign 20 made its appearance at the Southampton Boat Show. One customer, Henry Taylor, adored the boats but wanted one that would accommodate a sunbed the full width of the craft. This was an early example of Sunseeker giving customers exactly what they wanted. Robert’s younger brother, John, then joined the business. After learning the ropes and having a huge impact on the designs, he took the role as Product Development Director. The company was then able to meet the demands of the growing sport cruiser market which lead them to launch the Sports 23 and the Daycab 23.
Jumping into the 1980’s with a determined passion, Sunseeker began put a great importance on enjoyment, fun and high performance with every vessel built. This created an era of confidence that demonstrated itself in the remarkable Tomahawk 37. The nineties style became a bigger factor with a demand for even larger boats while more recently, Sunseeker launched their largest ever motor yacht, the 105MY. Sunseeker now even builds as large as a 131 and continues to be a popular choice for luxury motor yacht owners across the globe.
